April 11-17, 2022: Black Maternal Health Week

WHEREAS, the state of Michigan places great emphasis on access to high-value care to improve women’s health as well as the health of all birthing person’s throughout the birthing experience and beyond; and,
WHEREAS, annually in April, the United States observes National Minority Health Month to highlight the importance of improving the health of racial and ethnic minorities and reducing health disparities; and,
WHEREAS, annually, April 11-17 is recognized nationally as Black Maternal Heath Week, founded by Black Mamas Matter Alliance, which amplifies the voices of Black Mamas and centers the values and traditions of the reproductive and birth justice movements; and,
WHEREAS, while Michigan honors the prenatal through postpartum experiences of all birthing people, Black birthing persons are 2.8 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than their white counterparts; and,
WHEREAS, while Michigan has prioritized the well-being of birthing persons, Michigan also recognizes the social and structural barriers that contribute to the high maternal mortality and morbidity rates for Black birthing persons; and,
WHEREAS, the COVID-19 pandemic and systemic racism has exacerbated maternal health disparities; and,
WHEREAS, addressing the root causes of Black maternal morbidity and mortality through systems change, social justice work, mental health, breastfeeding and doula care support, with access to equitable health services and programs, Michigan will prioritize Black birthing families; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan can ensure Black families have the same opportunities to achieve optimal well-being and eradicate negative health outcomes for Black birthing persons;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan do hereby proclaim April 11-17, 2022, as Black Maternal Health Week in Michigan.
