May 8-15, 2022: Taiwanese American Heritage Week

WHEREAS, President Clinton dedicated the week after Mother’s Day as Taiwanese American Heritage Week (TAHW) in 1999; and,
WHEREAS, the United States is home to more than 342,000 Taiwanese immigrants, making them the 24th-largest immigrant group in the United States, similar in size to the Japanese and Iranian immigrant populations; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan is home to 4,720 Taiwanese Americans; and,
WHEREAS, a new report from the Pew Research Center in 2021 estimates that between 195,000 and 697,000 people of Taiwanese descent live in the United States; and,
WHEREAS, Taiwanese Americans have contributed significantly to Michigan’s economy and other fields. In addition to many Taiwanese American engineers working in the auto industry, there are entrepreneurs and those contributing in the democratic process (State Senator Stephanie Chang), in research and science (Nobel Prize laureate in physics Dr. Samuel Ting), in technology (Dr. Huei Peng, former Director of Mobility Transportation Center at the University of Michigan), in non-profit organization activities provided by organizations such as the Michigan Taiwanese American Organization (its president, Dr. Theresa Chang) MiTAI);
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 8-15, 2022 as Taiwanese American Heritage Week in Michigan.
