May 18, 2022: AAPI Day Against Bullying and Hate

WHEREAS, May 18 is the birthday of Vincent Chin, who was brutally murdered in a hate crime in 1982. His murder fueled a national Asian American activist movement that continues to this day; and,

WHEREAS, we have seen a staggering rise in bullying, discrimination, and hate crimes against the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community during the COVID-19 pandemic; and,

WHEREAS, 1 in 5 Asian Americans (21.2%) and Pacific Islanders (20%) experienced a hate incident in 2021 and nearly 8 out of 10 AAPI youth (77%) express anger over the current anti-Asian hate in this nation; and,

WHEREAS, every day, kids of all ages suffer from bullying in schools and online across the country; and,

WHEREAS, this problem is often compounded by cultural, religious, and linguistic barriers that can keep these youth from seeking and receiving help; and,

WHEREAS, certain AAPI subgroups, including South Asian, Muslim, Sikh, Micronesian, as well as LGBTQ+ youth, immigrants, and limited English proficient youth are more likely to be targets of bullying; and,

WHEREAS, the state of Michigan is committed to this important issue and encourages the public to foster dialogue, share resources, and learn more about what they can do to stop and prevent bullying;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 18, 2022 as AAPI Day Against Bullying and Hate in Michigan.
