May 23-29, 2022: Nonmelanoma Skin Cancer Awareness Week

WHEREAS, approximately 3.3 million people in the United States, will be diagnosed in 2022 with nonmelanoma skin cancer (basal and squamous cell carcinomas); and,

WHEREAS, more than 2,000 people die each year from nonmelanoma skin cancer; and,

WHEREAS, skin cancer risk factors include sun exposure, use of tanning equipment, prior skin cancer family history, age, and others; and,

WHEREAS, among the treatment options for nonmelanoma skin cancer are Mohs surgery, chemotherapy, cryotherapy, and image-guided superficial radiotherapy; and,

WHEREAS, individuals with nonmelanoma skin cancer should discuss their treatment options with their doctors and other healthcare providers in a timely fashion; and,

WHEREAS, the State of Michigan is committed to promoting healthy lifestyle choices and encourages its citizens to learn about risk factors, preventive strategies, and available treatment options;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 23-29, 2022, as Nonmelanoma Skin Cancer Awareness Week in Michigan.
