September 26, 2022: Mesothelioma Awareness Day
September 26, 2022
WHEREAS, mesothelioma is a cancer most commonly caused by asbestos that can affect the lining of the lungs, abdomen, and heart; and,
WHEREAS, symptoms of mesothelioma include chest pain, shortness of breath, painful coughing, unexplained weight loss, nausea, or unusual lumps under the skin on the chest; and,
WHEREAS, certain occupations have a higher risk of asbestos exposure, including auto mechanics, construction workers, firefighters, machinists, power plant workers, roofing, carpentry, or floor installers, and more; and,
WHEREAS, while regulations regarding asbestos have increased, workplace exposure is still a concern due to the former widespread use of asbestos; and,
WHEREAS, although some treatment is available, like surgery, chemotherapy or radiation, there is no known cure for mesothelioma; and,
WHEREAS, on Mesothelioma Awareness Day, we raise awareness for the disease, its causes, and the need to develop effective treatments;
NOW THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim September 26, 2022, as Mesothelioma Awareness Day in Michigan.
