November 11, 2022: Buddy Poppy Day

WHEREAS, the tradition of distributing Buddy Poppies to raise money for veterans in need by the Michigan Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and American Legion was started over 100 years ago; and,

WHEREAS, the choice of poppies as a memorial flower was inspired by the WWI era poem “In Flanders Fields,” and the tradition of placing the small red flowers on soldiers’ graves has lasted to this day; and,

WHEREAS, poppies serve as a reminder of those who have sacrificed their lives for our country and the state of Michigan, and can be worn or used to decorate graves or memorial sites; and,

WHEREAS, the proceeds raised from poppy distributions by the VFW and American Legion throughout the State of Michigan or donations to the VFW and Legion's Buddy Poppy Relief Program goes to support local veterans meet their needs; and,

WHEREAS, Buddy Poppy Day falls on Veterans Day to encourage people to honor our veterans and those whose lives were lost defending our country;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim November 11, 2022, as Buddy Poppy Day in Michigan.
