February 19, 2023: Hidden Heroes Day
February 19, 2023
WHEREAS, the series of wars in which our nation has been engaged since World War II has resulted in 5.5 million military and veteran caregivers, who are parents, spouses, siblings, and friends, caring for the wounded, ill, or injured heroes who have served our nation; and,
WHEREAS, these military and veteran caregivers assist wounded warriors with daily tasks, care for their injuries, administer medications, provide emotional support, and sometimes work outside the home to earn essential income; and,
WHEREAS, across the nation, there are public, private, and philanthropic resources dedicated to supporting our wounded, ill, and injured veterans and service members; and,
WHEREAS, most military and veteran caregivers consider their work to be simply carrying out their civic and patriotic duties, without realizing that they are, in fact, caregivers, and do not identify themselves as such; and,
WHEREAS, according to research conducted by the Elizabeth Dole Foundation, an alarming number of military and veteran caregivers suffer from numerous debilitating mental, physical, and emotional effects as a result of their caregiving duties; and,
WHEREAS, the third Friday in February is recognized as National Caregiver Day to recognize the significant impact these Hidden Heroes have throughout our state and nation;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim February 19, 2023, as Hidden Heroes Day in Michigan, and encourage communities throughout the state to become Hidden Hero communities by creating supportive environments and opportunities for military and veteran caregivers.
