May 2023: Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder Awareness Month
May 01, 2023
WHEREAS, Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) are a group of genetic disorders that affect the body’s connective tissues including the skin, joints, blood vessels, and organs; and,
WHEREAS, EDS is a chronic, lifelong condition with a frequency of at least one in 5,000 people regardless of age, race, or gender; and,
WHEREAS, hypermobility spectrum disorder (HSD) is diagnosed when an individual’s joint hypermobility, instability, injury, and pain cannot be explained by an another underlying condition affecting connective tissue such as EDS; and,
WHEREAS, due to the variability in HSD symptoms that overlap with other related disorders, appropriate medical management can be complex and challenging; and,
WHEREAS, a network of EDS and HSD support groups can help connect those managing life with these conditions and better inform the healthcare community and the public; and,
WHEREAS, there is currently no routine screening for EDS and HSD and no cure. Treatment focuses on managing symptoms and preventing dangerous complications. Early and accurate diagnosis provides opportunities for proper monitoring, timely medical interventions, and an improved quality of life; and,
WHEREAS, further medical research and awareness can lead to new treatments and bring hope for a cure;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 2023 as Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders Awareness Month in Michigan.
