September 17, 2023: Kleefstra Syndrome Awareness Day
September 17, 2023
WHEREAS, Kleefstra syndrome is a rare genetic disorder most commonly characterized by intellectual disability, low muscle tone, limited or absent speech, and a distinctive facial appearance. It is estimated that about 1 in 25,000 to 1 in 35,000 individuals are born with this condition; and,
WHEREAS, people living with Kleefstra syndrome can suffer from a wide range of additional physical, developmental, and behavioral challenges such as heart and kidney defects, seizures, severe respiratory infections, autism, and difficulties communicating and interacting; and,
WHEREAS, addressing the complex medical needs early in life is imperative to help families successfully care for their children at home. To help achieve this goal, more education, awareness, and support for families is desperately needed; and,
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim September 17, 2023 as Kleefstra Syndrome Awareness Day.
