November 10, 2023: NET Cancer Awareness Day
November 10, 2023
WHEREAS, neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are rare cancers and can occur anywhere in the body with most occurring in the lungs, small intestine, and pancreas.
WHEREAS, NETs are considered malignant no matter how slow or fast they grow, and if left untreated can result in serious illness and death; and,
WHEREAS, NETs are challenging to diagnose because cancer patients are often misdiagnosed or receive a delayed diagnosis. These tumors don’t always cause signs and symptoms at first and this can have a negative impact on a patient’s chance of survival and quality of life; and,
WHEREAS, although there have been advances in the detection and treatment of NET cancers, equitable access to innovative technologies and medicines is a major global challenge. Not all patients are benefiting quickly enough from scientific and medical progress in the field due to delayed treatment compromised by fragmented care and lack of access to specialists; and,
WHEREAS, with timely diagnosis and proper treatment, NET cancer patients can have significantly improved outcomes and quality of life. An estimated 77% of people with NETs are alive five years after diagnosis; and
NOW THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim November 10, 2023, as NET Cancer Awareness Day and encourage patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals, as well as the wider community to join with us as we work together to raise awareness about NET cancers and the need for timely diagnosis and access to optimal treatment and care.
