May 2024: Neurofibromatosis Awareness Month

WHEREAS, over two million people around the world are affected by neurofibromatosis (NF), a genetic disorder of the nervous system that is diagnosed in approximately 1 in every 3,000 births; and,
WHEREAS, NF causes tumors to grow on nerves throughout the body and can also affect the brain, cardiovascular system, bones, and skin; and,
WHEREAS, NF affects all populations equally, regardless of race, ethnicity, or gender; and,
WHEREAS, there are three distinct types of NF with symptoms ranging in severity that can lead to hearing and vision loss, hypertension, disfigurement, learning disabilities, severe pain, and cancer; and,
WHEREAS, because there is no cure for NF, treatment focuses on monitoring symptoms and preventing complications; and,
WHEREA, Neurofibromatosis Michigan, a nonprofit organization, has worked for over 30 years to enhance the quality of life for those affected by neurofibromatosis in Michigan by raising awareness and promoting scientific research into NF; and,
WHEREAS, the Children’s Tumor Foundation leads efforts to promote and financially sponsor world-class medical research aimed at finding effective treatments and, ultimately, a cure; works to improve access to quality patient health care through its national NF Clinic Network; and provides patient and family support through its educational materials, youth programs, and local chapter activities; and,
WHEREAS, during this month, we should support those who have NF and help promote early diagnosis, proper management and treatment, and research;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 2024 as Neurofibromatosis Awareness Month in Michigan.
