May 2024: Thalassemia Awareness Month

WHEREAS, May is Thalassemia Awareness Month, dedicated to all people who are living with thalassemia and to all professionals who are working to develop treatments and curative options, to aim for a long, good quality of life for thalassemia patients across Michigan and the world; and,
WHEREAS, thalassemia is a genetic blood disorder commonly found in people of Italian, Greek, Middle Eastern, Asian, and African descent; and,
WHEREAS, thalassemia is a very complicated disorder that requires a specialized multidisciplinary team led by hematologists to help those living with thalassemia live a healthier full life.
WHEREAS, those living with thalassemia make fewer healthy red blood cells which carry oxygen throughout the body and may require a lifetime of regular blood transfusions; and,
WHEREAS, excessive amount of blood transfusions causes iron to build up in various organs, especially the heart and liver, often causing multi-organ failure due to the iron overload and may result in early death; and,
WHEREAS, there is an increased risk associated with any pregnancy for women with thalassemia, and may lead to further complications with multiple organs including the heart liver; and
WHEREAS, the Cooley's Anemia Foundation is an advocacy organization aimed to be the voice of the thalassemia community; and,
WHEREAS, the Cooley’s Anemia Foundation has been serving the thalassemia community to improve their quality of life by offering programs and services, such as annual conferences led by thalassemia specialists, scholarships, advocacy efforts, emergency financial assistance, educational programs, patients, support groups, etc. to support healthier and more independent lives; and,
WHEREAS, healthcare providers and families should be aware of thalassemia, especially when treating patients that come from countries that have a high prevalence of this genetic illness, such as the Asian and Mediterranean countries;
NOW THEREFORE, I Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 2024 as Thalassemia Awareness Month in Michigan.
