WHEREAS, osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), also known as brittle bone disease, is a genetic disorder characterized by fragile bones that break easily; and,
WHEREAS, OI is a lifelong condition caused by a defect in collagen production that can also affect hearing, teeth, and joints; and,
WHEREAS, there are different types of OI with symptoms ranging from mild to severe and life-threatening; and,
WHEREAS, because there is no cure for OI, treatments focus on minimizing and correcting fractures, strengthening bones and muscles, and preserving mobility and independence; and,
WHEREAS, increased funding for education and research is needed to help find more effective treatments; and,
WHEREAS, the Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation’s board members, staff, medical professionals, and volunteers are joining together to boost awareness of OI, provide support to those who suffer from this disease and their caregivers, and promote research;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 4 – May 11, 2024, as Osteogenesis Imperfecta Awareness Week in Michigan.
