May 9, 2024: Mental Health Awareness Day for Children Youth and their Families

WHEREAS, effectively supporting the developmental and educational needs of children and youth from birth through transition to adulthood is an essential component in helping support mental and behavioral health needs; and,
WHEREAS, suicide is the second leading cause of death for children, youth, and young adults ages 10-24 in Michigan and underscores the urgent need for heightened awareness and support for mental health initiatives; and,
WHEREAS, due to disproportionately high suicide rates among Native American and African American communities, and significant challenges faced by LGBTQ+ youth, Michigan is committed to addressing disparities in access to mental health care and resources, particularly among underserved and marginalized communities, and as a provision of culturally competent care; and,
WHEREAS, increased education and awareness about the impact of mental health challenges on children, youth, and families to reduce stigma, promote early intervention, and strengthen suicide prevention efforts is critical to the future of Michigan; and,
WHEREAS, mental health needs must be met with compassion and support; and,
WHEREAS, recognizing the intersectionality of mental health, acknowledging that various factors such as race, ethnicity, culture, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, socio-economic status, and ability can impact mental well-being differently; and,
WHEREAS, supporting healthy, secure relationships between infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and their caregivers is seen as a critical component of healthy development, including continuing support of those relationships as children grow, and contributes to resiliency and lifelong wellness; and,
WHEREAS, the implementation of the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline stands as a testament to Michigan’s commitment to providing timely support and intervention; and,
WHEREAS, supporting the voices of children, youth, and their families are critical to inform mental health policies and programs and the future well-being of Michigan; and,
WHEREAS, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and the Association for Children’s Mental Health are committed to collaboration with children, youth, families, and state partners to address mental health needs in an inclusive and equitable way; and,
WHEREAS, it is appropriate that a day be designated each year for recognition of the importance of addressing children and youth’s mental health and well-being along with the well-being of their families; and,
WHEREAS, addressing the mental health challenges faced by Michiganders is a priority throughout the year;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 9, 2024, as Mental Health Awareness Day for Children, Youth, and their Families in Michigan.
