WHEREAS, there are 573 separate law enforcement agencies in Michigan, employing over 18,441 officers; and,
WHEREAS, our law enforcement officers put their lives at risk to keep us safe; and,
WHEREAS, we honor and remember those officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty, including the 637 officers from Michigan; and,
WHEREAS, we recognize the hard work of our law enforcement agencies throughout Michigan, from ensuring public safety in our communities and our roads to responding to disasters; and,
WHEREAS, we ask a lot of our Federal, State, Tribal, and local law enforcement, and it is our responsibility to ensure they have the training, resources, and support they need to do their jobs well and stay safe; and,
WHEREAS, my administration has been dedicated toward achieving this goal by investing millions for the training and hiring of hundreds of state police officers and troopers, 911 upgrades, mental health services, and training opportunities for law enforcement and first responders; and,
WHEREAS, we also developed a four-pillar plan to strengthen police-community relations in partnership with community leaders and law enforcement organizations by improving police standards and training, building a more diverse police force, encouraging cooperation between police and the community, and increasing transparency within police departments; and,
WHEREAS, my administration will continue to support our law enforcement officers;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 12 – 18, 2024, as Police Week in Michigan.
