WHEREAS, chronic disease affects hundreds of thousands of individuals throughout Michigan and millions throughout the United States; and
WHEREAS, the deadliest and costliest chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, and obesity, are also the most preventable; and,
WHEREAS, Chronic Disease Day promotes actionable resources to reduce individual risk and lower the rate of chronic disease in America; and,
WHEREAS, at a time when new treatments are being developed and diseases that were once life-ending are now survivable and manageable, patients continue to struggle to access affordable and effective healthcare; and
WHEREAS, Chronic Disease Day is supported by advocacy organizations dedicated to assisting patients to overcome challenges with access to care throughout Michigan and across the United States; and,
WHEREAS, widespread awareness, increased community engagement, and ongoing advocacy are critical to improving patients’ quality of life and access to care; and,
WHEREAS, on this day, we raise awareness of chronic disease, provide support to those who live with a chronic disease, and promote more research to improve treatments;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim July 10, 2024, as Chronic Disease Day in Michigan.
