WHEREAS, limb girdle muscular dystrophy (LGMD) refers to a group of inherited disorders that causes progressive muscle weakness and wasting; and,
WHEREAS, LGMD most commonly affects muscles closest to the body (proximal muscles) such as the shoulders, upper arms, pelvic area, and thighs; and,
WHEREAS, there are more than 20 different forms of LGMD caused by different gene mutations. Severity, age of onset, and symptoms vary among the different subtypes and even within families; and,
WHEREAS, LGMD is a progressive and debilitating condition that has a significant impact on the lives of those affected, including children and adults across all ethnic groups; and,
WHEREAS, individuals and families affected by LGMD often experience a delay in diagnosis and require specialized, coordinated care throughout their lives; and,
WHEREAS, although research is ongoing and important advances are being made every day in understanding the genetic causes of LGMD, there is still no known cure. Treatment is supportive, focusing on managing the complications of the disease;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim September 30, 2024, as Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy (LGMD) Awareness Day in Michigan.
