November 20, 2024: Senior Companion Volunteer Day

WHEREAS, as individuals retire, they are more likely to spend increased time volunteering; and,

WHEREAS, nearly 23 percent of older adults volunteered last year; and,

WHEREAS, we must retain the talents and skills of older adults who help their communities in a variety of ways; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan’s 13 AmeriCorps Senior Companion programs provide low-income adults, ages 55 and older, challenging and meaningful volunteer opportunities in 47 counties throughout the state; and,

WHEREAS, partnering with more than 146 nonprofit organizations, Senior Companion programs meet a variety of personal and community needs and make a positive difference in areas such as long-term care, poverty, health care, and safety; and,

WHEREAS, in Michigan, 462 Senior Companion volunteers contribute 337,868 hours of service to 2,200 older adults who have difficulty with daily living tasks and respite care to families; and,

WHEREAS, on this day, we join with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and Behavioral and Physical Health and Aging Services Administration within MDHHS to raise awareness of Michigan’s Senior Companion program and to recognize the outstanding service of senior companion volunteers currently serving throughout the state providing a positive impact. Their nurturing companionship and overall efforts have contributed greatly to the lives of many older adults and families and have helped strengthen our communities;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim November 20, 2024, as Senior Companion Volunteer Day in Michigan.
