May 9, 2025: Europe Day

WHEREAS, this year marks the 75th anniversary of Europe Day, commemorating the historic Schuman Declaration of May 9, 1950, which laid the foundation for lasting peace, unity, and cooperation in Europe, and this milestone offers a moment to reflect on the enduring importance of international partnership and shared democratic values; and,

WHEREAS, the state of Michigan is proudly home to more than 124,000 European-born residents and countless more Michiganders of European descent, whose rich cultural heritage, traditions, and contributions have helped shape our communities, strengthen our economy, and enrich the social fabric of our state; and,

WHEREAS, investments by the European Union play a vital role in supporting Michigan’s workforce, with the creation of 55,516 jobs across the state since 2003 that are directly tied to EU investment, including more than 35,000 jobs in the automotive industry alone; and,

WHEREAS, the strong and dynamic economic relationship between Michigan and the European Union continues to flourish, with Michigan goods exports to EU member states totaling $5.8 billion in 2024; and,

WHEREAS, on this day, I encourage Michiganders to celebrate and deepen their understanding of the European cultures that have contributed to the identity of our state through cultural festivals, museum exhibits, educational programs, cuisine, and music;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 9, 2025, as Europe Day in Michigan.
