May 29, 2025: Black Legacy Day

WHEREAS, the State of Michigan places great value on the culture, heritage, and lives of Black individuals—past, present, and future; and,

WHEREAS, on May 16th each year, individuals and organizations across Michigan, including the Black Legacy Advancement Coalition, reflect on the collective commitment to defend and protect the right of Black Americans to thrive and realize their fullest potential; and,

WHEREAS, leaders and advocates in Michigan remain dedicated to advancing this cause, prioritizing the well-being and empowerment of Black communities; and,

WHEREAS, the preservation of Black history, legacy, and future aspirations is recognized as a vital part of Michigan’s rich cultural heritage, celebrated by all Michiganders; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan acknowledges the ongoing impact of social and structural barriers that contribute to systemic racism, discrimination, and injustice that have disproportionately affected Black individuals throughout history; and,

WHEREAS, we recognize the importance of collective engagement in the fight for human rights and the need to address the root causes of systemic inequalities, while honoring the resilience of Black individuals and communities; and,

WHEREAS, we are engaged in making significant investments toward a more equitable future for all Michiganders, including Black Michiganders, through systemic change, social justice work, and access to equitable services and programs for fair housing, education, physical health, and mental health; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan is committed to ensuring that future generations of Black individuals have equal access to opportunities, striving for racial equity and well-being for all communities in the state, both now and in the future;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, and Garlin Gilchrist II, lieutenant governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 29, 2025, as Black Legacy Day in the State of Michigan.
