August 4, 2025: Arts, Culture, and Humanities Day

WHEREAS, arts, culture, and the humanities serve as the backbone of our communities, enriching the fabric of life in Michigan, driving economic growth by fostering creativity, cultivating an innovative workforce, and sustaining global competitiveness—creating jobs and opportunities across a wide range of industries; and,

WHEREAS, from rural towns to major cities, arts, culture, and the humanities strengthen Michigan’s communities by celebrating both cherished and emerging traditions, sharing the stories of our people and places, promoting social connection, and fostering the entrepreneurial spirit essential to thriving communities where young people want to live, work, and build their futures; and,

WHEREAS, arts, culture, and the humanities enhance education at every stage of life, sparking curiosity, developing human potential, narrowing the achievement gap, and improving academic outcomes—laying the foundation for an innovative and skilled workforce; and,

WHEREAS, arts, culture and humanities inspire us to bring grace and beauty into our lives, giving us opportunities to share our creative gifts and experience the creativity of others; and,

WHEREAS, we join in celebration with the United States’ 120,000 nonprofit arts organizations, the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, more than 4,500 local arts agencies, and the arts and humanities councils of all 50 states and six U.S. jurisdictions and districts; and,

WHEREAS, the nonprofit, commercial, and educational components of the nation’s arts and culture sector represent a $1.17 trillion industry—supporting 5.4 million jobs and contributing 4.2% to the U.S. economy; and,

WHEREAS, the arts, culture, and humanities sector support economic vitality by creating jobs, driving tourism, and offering career pathways for young people;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim August 4, 2025, as Arts, Culture, and Humanities Day in Michigan and call upon all Michiganders to recognize, celebrate, and promote the vital role that arts, culture, and the humanities play in enriching our communities and shaping our future.
