September 2025: Chronic Pain Awareness Month

WHEREAS, approximately 50 million Americans live with chronic pain as result of serious illness or injury, causing physical and emotional suffering; and,
WHEREAS, chronic pain is one of the most cited reasons that Americans seek medical care; and,
WHEREAS, the health and economic cost of chronic pain in the United States is an estimated $560 to $630 billion annually in medical expenses, lost wages, and lost productivity; and,
WHEREAS, chronic pain can negatively impact an individual’s quality of life and the ability to actively participate in meaningful activities such as working, socializing, and engaging in recreational activities, as well as adversely impacts the families and caregivers of chronic pain sufferers; and,
WHEREAS, educating patients and healthcare professionals about the complexities of chronic pain, and advocating for better access to effective treatment, results in better patient outcomes; and,
WHEREAS, increasing awareness of the effects of chronic pain on people’s lives validates those living in pain, and decreases stigma for those seeking compassionate care and support; and,
WHEREAS, Pain Awareness Month is dedicated to promoting better understanding of chronic pain, available social support, and effective intervention for managing symptoms;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim September 2025 as Chronic Pain Awareness Month in Michigan.
