WHEREAS, as fall arrives, Michigan welcomes the annual transformation of its forests, with the leaves beginning their colorful transformation; and,
WHEREAS, fall is the perfect time to visit Michigan to take in our state’s natural beauty and enjoy our fall traditions from cider mills to pumpkin patches; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan is home to lush landscapes in the nationally protected areas of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and Hiawatha National Forest where fall color will soon be on full display; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan’s extensive natural resources include 19 million acres of forest, more than 13,000 miles of state-designated trails, and scenic driving routes; and,
WHEREAS, the cities and towns of Michigan play host to many fall events like the German-inspired Frankenmuth Oktoberfest and the Fall Fudge Festival on Mackinac Island; and,
WHEREAS, USA Today named the Upper Peninsula the number one place to see fall colors in the United States in 2024; and,
WHEREAS, traveling to see Michigan’s vibrant fall colors — sometimes called “leaf peeping” — is a popular tradition that inspires day trips, weekend getaways, and return visits; and,
WHEREAS, according to the 2024 report of economic impact of tourism in Michigan, 131.2 million visitors spent $30.7 billion in the Michigan economy, generating a total economic benefit of $54.8 billion;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim September 20, 2025, as Fall Color Day in Michigan.
