November 19, 2025: Senior Companion Volunteer Day

WHEREAS, as individuals retire, they are more likely to spend increased time volunteering; and,

WHEREAS, older adults demonstrate a high rate of volunteerism, contributing their time, skills, and experience to a wide range of community organizations, civic initiatives, and charitable causes, thereby strengthening local communities and enriching the lives of others; and,

WHEREAS, it is important to retain the talents and skills of older adults who contribute to communities in many ways; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan’s AmeriCorps Senior Companion programs provide low-income adults, ages 55 and older, with challenging and meaningful volunteer opportunities throughout the state; and,

WHEREAS, by partnering with numerous non-profit organizations, the Senior Companion program addresses a variety of personal and community needs, creating a positive impact; and,

WHEREAS, Senior Companion volunteers in Michigan provide essential support to older adults who need assistance with daily living and offer respite to families, and,

WHEREAS, on this day, we join with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and Behavioral and Physical Health and Aging Services Administration within MDHHS to raise awareness of Michigan’s Senior Companion program and to recognize the outstanding service of senior companion volunteers currently serving throughout the state providing a positive impact. Their nurturing companionship and overall efforts have contributed greatly to the lives of many older adults and families and have helped strengthen our communities;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim November 19, 2025, as Senior Companion Volunteer Day in Michigan.
