January 26-30, 2026: Data Privacy Week

WHEREAS, the State of Michigan is committed to protecting the personal information of the public and ensuring that data is collected, stored, and used responsibly and transparently; and

WHEREAS, data privacy is a fundamental right and a cornerstone of trust in the digital age, affecting individuals, businesses, and government alike; and

WHEREAS, Data Privacy Week, observed during the last week of January in North America, extends the recognition of Data Privacy Day on January 28, which commemorates the 1981 signing of Convention 108—the first legally binding international treaty on privacy and data protection; and

WHEREAS, this is the first year that the State of Michigan is formally recognizing Data Privacy Week, with the theme “Privacy Takes a Team;” and

WHEREAS, Data Privacy Week serves as a vital reminder of the importance of safeguarding personal data, raising awareness about privacy practices, and empowering individuals to take control of their digital lives; and

WHEREAS, the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget (DTMB), along with other state entities, continues to lead efforts in promoting cybersecurity, data governance, and privacy best practices across the public sector; and

WHEREAS, the Michigan Center for Data and Analytics, located within DTMB, is home to the state’s chief privacy officer, a civil service role I created to ensure that state entities have the tools, guidance, and resources they need to succeed in their privacy operations and uphold the highest standards of data stewardship; and

WHEREAS, all Michiganders are encouraged to learn more about how their data is used, understand their rights, and take proactive steps to protect their personal information online;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim January 26–30, 2026, as Data Privacy Week in Michigan and urge all residents, businesses, and government entities to observe this week with activities that promote awareness, education, and action toward a more secure and privacy-conscious future.
