March 15-21, 2026: Severe Weather Awareness Week

WHEREAS, the State of Michigan experienced a historic spring ice storm in 2025, causing widespread devastation and extended power outages across 12 counties; and,

WHEREAS, severe weather events, including thunderstorms, windstorms, floods, and tornadoes, continue to pose significant threats to the safety and well-being of Michigan residents; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan communities have faced numerous severe weather-related emergencies in the past year, underscoring the need for preparedness and awareness; and,

WHEREAS, the United States experiences more than 1,000 tornadoes annually, with a total of 33 in Michigan in 2025; and,

WHEREAS, since 1977, more than 80% of Michigan’s federally declared disasters have been caused by severe weather, resulting in tragic loss of life, property damage, and economic disruption; and,

WHEREAS, all Michigan residents are urged to recognize the warning signs of severe weather, develop emergency plans, and take necessary precautions to safeguard their families, homes, and communities; and,

WHEREAS, the Michigan State Police, emergency management officials, the National Weather Service, and media partners collaborate each year to educate the public on the dangers of tornadoes and other severe weather events, as well as the critical steps that can save lives;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim March 15 – 21, 2026, as Severe Weather Awareness Week in Michigan, and encourage all residents to "Know Your Plan" and stay prepared for severe weather emergencies.
