April 2026: Medicaid Awareness Month

WHEREAS, Medicaid is the largest health insurance program in the U.S.; and,

WHEREAS, Medicaid provides a full range of health care services to adults and children with a lower income; and,

WHEREAS, Medicaid covers one in four Michiganders—2.8 million people statewide —including half the kids in Michigan and more than a third of Michiganders in rural areas; and,

WHEREAS, Medicaid supports nearly 20% of net patient revenues for Michigan hospitals, being especially critical for Michiganders in rural and small towns where local hospitals are often the largest employers; and,

WHEREAS, Medicaid covers nearly 1 million adults in the Healthy Michigan Plan, with zero premiums for Healthy Michigan Plan and MI Child Medicaid plans; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan’s Medicaid program provides comprehensive health care coverage including medical visits, hospital stays, prescription medications, preventive care, mental health services, and dental care; and,

WHEREAS, Medicaid ensures that Michigan residents have access to quality, affordable care without financial barriers whether they need a routine check-up or are facing a health challenge; and,

WHEREAS, Michiganders are encouraged to apply for Medicaid if they believe they are eligible, or to submit renewal paper twice annually, beginning in 2027, to ensure they have access to needed comprehensive healthcare coverage;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, and Garlin Gilchrist II, lieutenant governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim April 2026 as Medicaid Awareness Month in Michigan.
