April 19, 2026
WHEREAS, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a gastrointestinal disorder of gut-brain interaction that is characterized by recurrent abdominal pain, bloating and altered bowel habits. Although many Americans experience these symptoms, many do not recognize them as IBS, and for this reason it is often underdiagnosed; and,
WHEREAS, the symptoms of IBS affect up to an estimated 15% of the population, or more than 45 million Americans. The quality of life may be significantly lower among individuals experiencing IBS symptoms compared to those without the condition; and,
WHEREAS, although IBS has a considerable impact on personal relationships and workplace productivity, people with these symptoms often suffer in silence because of their reluctance to discuss their pain; and,
WHEREAS, a number of Michigan organizations are committed to supporting individuals affected by IBS by raising public awareness, discovering innovative therapies and providing patient education materials; and,
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim April 19-23, 2026, IBS Awareness Week in Michigan.
