May 2026: Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness Month

WHEREAS, Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness Month encourages sun safety awareness and is an opportunity to remind residents to protect their skin while enjoying the outdoors; and,
WHEREAS, Melanoma and Skin Cancer detection and prevention are high priorities; and,
WHEREAS, Skin Cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, with more than 9,500 people diagnosed with skin cancer every day and more than two skin cancer deaths every hour. Melanoma is the most deadly type of skin cancer and the leading cause of death from skin disease; and,
WHEREAS, public education and awareness are essential in reducing the incidence and impact of melanoma and skin cancer, empowering individuals to take responsibility of their own skin health and that of their families; and,
WHEREAS, People can significantly reduce their chances of developing Melanoma by being aware of the risks including avoiding prolonged sun exposure, wearing protective clothing, applying sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15, avoiding tanning indoors, and examining their skin regularly for the warning signs of skin cancer; and,
WHEREAS, the State of Michigan recognizes the importance of supporting survivors, honoring those lost, and encouraging prevention through the public action and education;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 2026 as Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness Month in Michigan.
