May 2026: National Cancer Research Month

WHEREAS, cancer remains a leading cause of death in Michigan and across the United States, affecting thousands of families each year and placing a significant burden on our healthcare system and economy; and

WHEREAS, National Cancer Research Month is observed each May to recognize the importance of research, prevention, and innovation in saving lives; and

WHEREAS, disparities in cancer outcomes persist across Michigan, especially in communities facing environmental and economic barriers to health; and

WHEREAS, environmental factors such as air pollution, water contamination, and other carcinogens increase cancer risk and highlight the need for education, prevention, and continued research; and

WHEREAS, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is a global leader in pediatric cancer research and treatment, advancing lifesaving cures for children with cancer and other life-threatening diseases; and

WHEREAS, since 1962, treatments developed at St. Jude have helped raise the childhood cancer survival rate from 20 percent to more than 80 percent; and,

WHEREAS, St. Jude freely shares its research worldwide, allowing providers in Michigan to improve care and save lives; and

WHEREAS, families treated at St. Jude never receive a bill for treatment, travel, housing, or food, removing financial barriers to care; and

WHEREAS, Miss Michigan Volunteer 2026 is partnering with the American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities and the St. Jude Detroit office to lead a statewide initiative throughout May, including volunteer events, leadership trainings, K–12 education, awareness campaigns, and fundraising efforts; and

WHEREAS, these efforts expand awareness, promote prevention and environmental health education, and mobilize communities across Michigan to support lifesaving research;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 2026 as National Cancer Research Month in Michigan.
