February 7-14, 2026: Congenital Heart Disease Awareness Week
February 07, 2026
WHEREAS, congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most prevalent birth defect in the United States, affecting one in every 100 births each year; and,
WHEREAS, CHD is a lifelong condition with no cure, often requiring ongoing specialized care, medical interventions, and in many cases, surgical treatment, with nearly 25% of affected children requiring at least one heart operation to survive; and
WHEREAS, advancements in medical research, early detection, and treatment have significantly improved outcomes, allowing nearly 85% of individuals born with congenital heart disease to live into adulthood, underscoring the importance of continued awareness, research, and access to specialized care; and,
WHEREAS, many families are first introduced to congenital heart disease through routine medical findings, such as the detection of a heart murmur, which can lead to the diagnosis of serious and sometimes multiple congenital heart defects, as well as the discovery of underlying genetic conditions; and
WHEREAS, families affected by CHD face emotional, physical, and financial challenges while navigating complex healthcare systems, and benefit greatly from increased public awareness, education, compassion, and community support;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim February 7 – 14, 2026, as Congenital Heart Disease Awareness Week in the state of Michigan, and encourage all residents to join in raising awareness, promoting education, and supporting individuals and families affected by congenital heart disease.
