A fire is a devastating loss for any Michigander.  It is important to review your homeowner's or business owner's insurance policy or speak with your agent to ensure you are properly covered.  Keep a detailed inventory of your belongings to make the claim process runs efficiently.  Obtain an inventory checklist or download an inventory at Before the Disaster to begin this process.

Experiencing a fire is a stressful time. After the Disaster provides helpful tips on how to initiate your claim after you are affected by a fire.  In addition to this information, it is important to know the deductible you'll be responsible for under your policy.  This amount will be deducted from the settlement with the insurance company.  Once your claim is received by the insurance company, they will begin their investigation.  There is not a time limit for the insurer to complete the investigation.  Stay in contact with the company to see if there is additional information needed regarding your claim.  If you believe the amount of time is unreasonable, you may consider filing a complaint with DIFS.

If your property or home is not insured, contact your local Red Cross for assistance 800-RED CROSS (800-733-2767) or a FEMA Disaster Recovery Center for assistance 800-621-FEMA (800-621-3362).  Disaster assistance is money or direct assistance to individuals, families, and businesses. It is meant to help you with critical expenses that cannot be covered in other ways.

If your automobile catches fire, insurance benefits can be obtained through comprehensive coverage on your automobile policy.  Comprehensive insurance pays for your car if it is stolen or for repairs if it is damaged by a falling object, fire, flood, vandalism, or collision with an animal.  Comprehensive Coverage is not a mandatory coverage in Michigan.  If you do not have comprehensive coverage on your vehicle at the time of the loss, you will not be covered.  For more information regarding automobile insurance you can review our Automobile Insurance Buyers Guide.
