Reinstatement of a Counselor License

Resident Counselor Reinstatement:

A resident counselor may become inactive due to non-payment of the annual renewal fee by March 31 or the surrender of their license.

• If the license has been inactive less than 12 months
• The applicant is not required to take an examination if requesting the same authority previously held.
• An Electronic Resident Licensing (ERL) application must be submitted through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) website.
  
  
• If the license has been inactive more than 12 months, the process is the same as applying for initial licensure as found on the web page How to Become Licensed as a Counselor.

Non- Resident Counselor Reinstatement:

A non-resident counselor may become inactive due to non-payment of the annual renewal fee by March 31, Suspension for Compliance, or the surrender of their license.

• If the license has been inactive less than 12 months
• The applicant is not required to take an examination or provide proof of successful completion of an examination if requesting the same authority previously held.
• An Electronic Non-Resident Licensing (NRL) application must be submitted through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) website.  Please be aware that non-resident counselor applicants must be licensed in the state in which their principle place of residence or business is maintained for all lines of authority requested in Michigan, if their resident state licenses counselors.
