Reinstatement of a Solicitor License

Before submitting an application, we advise reviewing the web page Insurance Adjuster, Counselor, and Solicitor Application Background Questions: What You Need to Know BEFORE You Apply.  DIFS Insurance Licensing staff will conduct background checks and review responses to the background questions.

Resident Solicitor

A resident solicitor may become inactive due to:

  • Non-payment of the annual renewal fee by March 31 or the surrender of their license.
    • If the license has been inactive less than 12 months
      • The applicant is not required to take an examination if requesting the same authority previously held.
      • An Electronic Resident Licensing (ERL) application must be submitted through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) website.
    • If the license has been inactive more than 12 months, the process is the same as applying for initial licensure as found on the web page How to Become Licensed as a Solicitor.

  • Lack of Continuing Education (CE) credits prior to the CE review date.
    • If the license has been inactive less than 12 months, the licensee must complete all CE coursework and the credits must be reported by the CE provider.
      • If the license has been inactive less than 90 days, the license will become active when the CE credits are reported to DIFS; a new application is not required.
      • If the license has been inactive more than 90 days, an Electronic Resident Licensing (ERL) application must be submitted through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) website.
    • If the license has been inactive more than 12 months, the process is the same as applying for initial licensure as found on the web page How to Become Licensed as a Solicitor.

Non-Resident Solicitor

A non-resident solicitor license may become inactive for non-payment of the annual renewal fee by March 31, Suspension for Compliance, or the surrender of their license.

  • If the license has been inactive less than 12 months
    • The applicant is not required to take an examination or provide proof of successful completion of an examination if requesting the same authority previously held.
    • An Electronic Non-Resident Licensing (NRL) application must be submitted through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) website.  Please be aware that non-resident solicitor applicants must be licensed in the state in which their principle place of residence or business is maintained for all lines of authority requested in Michigan, if their resident state licenses solicitors.

  • If the license has been inactive more than 12 months, the process is the same as applying for initial licensure as found on the web page How to Become Licensed as a Solicitor.
