Life Insurance Awareness Month: DIFS Offers Tips to Help Michiganders Protect Their Families’ Financial Futures

(LANSING, MICH) -- During National Life Insurance Awareness Month, the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) is reminding Michiganders that the Department is available to help answer questions and provide other assistance for those looking for more information about life insurance, including how to find and claim benefits under a lost policy.

“Life insurance can provide financial protection to people who depend on you when they need it most,” said DIFS Director Anita Fox. “Life Insurance Awareness Month is a good opportunity for Michiganders to learn about life insurance and to work with a licensed insurance agent to make sure their current coverage meets their current needs and budget. DIFS offers free resources to help consumers make informed decisions and is available to answer questions along the way. DIFS offers free resources and consumer protection tools to support Michiganders, including:

• Tips on Buying Life Insurance: For those interested in purchasing a life insurance policy, there are simple steps to take to help you shop safely and confidently:
• Research and educate yourself on life insurance and prepare any questions you may have for an insurance agent.
• Choose an insurance agent and company you feel confident in to meet your life insurance needs. The DIFS Locator is available to verify the licensure of an insurance professional.
• Work with your insurance agent or company to determine the best type of life insurance policy and coverage amount for your needs and budget.
• Review your insurance application for accuracy, make an informed decision, and only purchase life insurance if you intend to commit to the duration of the policy.
• The Life Insurance and Annuity Search Service (LIAS): LIAS is a free program that helps families locate lost life insurance policies and annuity contracts. To date, DIFS’ LIAS program has been able to help recover more than $82 million for Michiganders. To learn more, visit michigan.gov/LIAS.
