As newlyweds, young army officer Ulysses S. Grant and his wife, Julia Dent Grant, lived in this Detroit house from 1849 to 1850. The house is also historically significant for its connection to the Black Bottom neighborhood in which it spent its first century.

The Michigan History Center and Black Bottom Archives, a Detroit community organization, are working together to turn the house into a welcoming place for learning and community conversation. The house is currently under extensive renovation and is closed to the public.
