New Safety School Toolkits Available for Michigan K-12 Educators
October 20, 2025
To help schools strengthen safety protocols and build a more secure learning environment, the Michigan State Police (MSP) Office of School Safety has released three new School Safety Toolkits. Developed with federal funding, the toolkits are available online and aim to keep school communities informed, prepared and responsive.
“Strengthening your school safety plan is one of the best proactive moves you can make,” said Col. James F. Grady II, director of the Michigan State Police. “Each toolkit provides specific guidance on how to construct well-rounded plans using step-by-step tools, clearly defined roles and responsibilities, and proven strategies. Taking advantage of these resources can help ensure educators and administrators respond confidently and effectively in a range of situations.”
Each toolkit is available for download on the MSP Office of School Safety website. The three resources include:
School Crisis Communication Planning
Designed to help school leaders develop and implement messaging strategies that support safety, reduce confusion, and build trust during critical incidents.
Emergency Preparedness for School Events
Designed to help educators and school leaders prepare for emergencies before, during, and after school-sponsored events, both on and off campus.
Best Practices for Investigating Student Online Activity
Designed to help educators and school staff responsibly navigate online investigations.
This project is supported by Michigan’s FY19 STOP School Violence Technology and Threat Assessment Solutions for Safer Schools Program # 2019-YS-BX-0084, awarded by the Bureau of Justice Assistance, Office of Justice Programs, U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), and administered by the Michigan State Police (MSP).
