Albion-Sheridan Landfill Superfund Site (Albion, Calhoun County)

Albion-Sheridan Landfill is a Superfund site, located at 29951 East Erie Road. The landfill accepted municipal and industrial waste from the City of Albion and nearby townships, including metal plating sludges and ceased operation in 1981. Contaminants on the site include arsenic, iron and manganese. Early cleanup actions included disposing of about 46 drums located near the surface of the landfill. The groundwater was sampled for PFAS in late 2024 and the results showed groundwater over criteria, the highest of which was 17 ppt PFOS (compared to 16 ppt) and 10 ppt PFOA (compared to 8 ppt). Groundwater flow is to the south, southwest towards the North Branch Kalamazoo River.
