Camp Grayling (Grayling, Crawford County, Kalkaska County, Otsego County)

Camp Grayling is the National Guard’s largest training post, encompassing over 147,000 acres, and it provides training facilities and support services for the Army National Guard (ARNG), Air National Guard, US Army, US Army Reserve units, and allied forces. Camp Grayling is divided into North and South Post operational areas. Historically, aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) was stored and/or used for training at various locations, including Grayling Army Airfield (GAAF), Cantonment, Maneuver Area Training Equipment Site (MATES), and North/South Post. PFAS was first discovered in groundwater on base in 2016.

Under the Comprehensive, Environmental Restoration, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), the Army National Guard is responsible for investigating and if necessary, addressing any environmental contamination caused by the Army National Guard while operating at Camp Grayling. EGLE serves as a partnering agency with the Army National Guard and does not lead the investigation. See below for specific details regarding the GAAF, Cantonment, MATES, and North/South Post investigations.

Drinking water information

Municipal water has been chosen by community and regulatory stakeholders to be the best final solution for providing safe drinking water to Grayling residents. Extension of the Beaver Creek Grayling Township Utility Authority municipal water system is planned for the GAAF and Lake Margrethe areas starting in summer 2026. Grayling Township has been awarded $26.5 million in grant funds by EGLE, along with over $50 million in additional funding and grants from the Army National Guard and Congress. Eligible residents will be contacted with further sign-up instructions.

DHHS will continue offering drinking water well sampling to residents near Camp Grayling, including those whose wells were previously sampled for PFAS or who were offered drinking water filters, or both, near the GAAF, Cantonment, and MATES. There is no charge for the testing. Households with detections of PFAS near GAAF and Cantonment have been provided point of use filters and replacement cartridges by District Health Department #10.

DHHS will contact residents by letter and by phone to schedule sample appointments. Seasonal residents who are away for the winter can schedule an appointment at a later date. The goal of the repeat testing is to:

  • Determine if PFAS is in residential wells
  • If so, the amount
  • If the amount of PFAS is increasing, decreasing, or remaining the same over time

DHHS will sample drinking water wells in coordination with EGLE and District Health Department #10. Residents who have questions about this PFAS sampling effort, their sample results, or who would like to schedule an appointment can call the DHHS Environmental Health Hotline at 800-648-6942.
