North Post/South Post of Camp Grayling Area of Interest (Waters, Otsego & Crawford Counties)

Background

North Post and South Post of Camp Grayling include 8 areas that were investigated by the Army National Guard based on the potential for AFFF to have been used, stored, disposed of, or released for training and fire-fighting activities during the 1970s-80s. North Post is primarily used for artillery, tanks, and larger crew-served weapons. The investigation areas include Range 40 Complex (AOI 6), Current and Former Northern Forward Operating Base (AOI 7), and Lewiston Grade Road (AOI 9). South Post is primarily used for small arms training and light demolition. The investigation areas include Range 8 (AOI 10), Small Arms Ranges (AOI 11), Light Demolition Ranges (AOI 12), Range 15 (AOI 13), and Howes Lake (AOI 19).

In 2023, EGLE conducted precautionary drinking water well sampling at 35 wells on the east side of Guthrie Lake and Section One Lake, as well as between Jones Lake and southern Range 40. MDHHS conducted resampling of 24 wells in 2025, and there were no exceedances of EGLE Part 201 Criteria for 7 PFAS during either sampling event.

Following the CERCLA process, the Army National Guard completed the PFAS Preliminary Assessment in 2018 and the Site Inspection in 2023. Due to data gaps in the initial Site Inspection, a supplemental Site Inspection was completed in 2024. During the Site Inspections, soil, groundwater, and surface water samples were collected. PFAS compounds were not detected on-base in exceedance of Michigan Part 201 groundwater clean-up criteria or Rule 57 Surface Water Quality Values. In soil and groundwater, PFAS was detected below 2022 Army National Guard screening levels, and no further evaluation has been completed. These results are subject to reevaluation based on the release of updated screening levels in 2025.

Anticipated Activities

No further drinking water sampling is expected by EGLE.

EGLE anticipates the Army National Guard will reevaluate this data in the future.
