Richfield Road Area Sites (Flint, Genesee County)

In April 2025, EGLE received baseline environmental assessments (BEAs) for five parcels in Flint/Genesee Township all currently owned by Carvana and used for parking, storage, vehicle repair or office space.  A BEA is a document that allows a person to buy or operate at a site without being held liable for existing contamination.  The BEAs contained data showing PFAS exceeding groundwater cleanup criteria at all five parcels.  The highest concentration of PFOA amongst the five parcels was 33 parts per trillion (ppt) PFOA (compared to 8 ppt), 31 ppt PFOS (compared to 16 ppt) and 95 ppt PFHxS (compared to 51 ppt).  Groundwater is assumed to flow to the northwest.

Summaries of each parcel are below.  The “Facility ID” number is where more information can be found in EGLE’s RIDE database.

MPART PFAS GIS

This app provides access to multiple datasets from Michigan’s PFAS Action Response Team (MPART), including data on official sites, surface water, public water supplies, and fish sampling.

Drinking water information

Municipal water is available in most of the area, however, EGLE, DHHS and local health staff identified six drinking water wells down gradient of the 3231 Richfield Road parcel in Genesee Township. EGLE will seek permission to sample these wells in June 2025.
