Auto Ion Chemicals, Inc. Superfund Site (Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County)

Auto Ion Chemicals, Inc. is a Superfund site located at 74 Mills Street. From 1914 to 1956, the property served as a municipal coal burning electrical generating station. From 1964 to 1973, Auto Ion Chemicals, Inc. treated chromium plating and electroplating waste at this site. In the Superfund site’s 2021 Five Year Review, EGLE recommended that the EPA include PFAS sampling. The primary responsible party sampled groundwater for PFAS in March of 2026. The highest exceedance was 9,100 ppt PFOS (compared to 16 ppt). Groundwater flow is generally towards the Kalamazoo River south of the site (when the river is lower than the groundwater); otherwise, it can flow north onto the site.

MPART PFAS GIS

This app provides access to multiple datasets from Michigan’s PFAS Action Response Team (MPART), including data on official sites, surface water, public water supplies, and fish sampling.

Drinking water information

EGLE, MDHHS, and local health have reviewed nearby residential well logs and while most homes and businesses are on municipal water, there is one private drinking water well located within a mile of this and several other nearby MPART sites and an MPART Area of Interest. A letter to that resident will be sent to seek permission to sample their well.
