Dexter Lock (Grand Rapids, Kent County)
The former Dexter Lock facility, located at 1601 Madison Avenue, manufactured metal hardware from 1916 to 1982, after which the site was used for a variety of manufacturing purposes until 2016. In 2021, the former manufacturing building was demolished. A portion of the site has since been redeveloped with a new industrial and office building. As part of the environmental assessment process associated with the redevelopment of the site, groundwater was sampled for PFAS. Several wells were over criteria, and the maximum groundwater concentrations were 77 ppt PFOS (compared to 16) and 8.3 ppt PFOA (compared to 8).
