H. Brown Co., Inc., Superfund Site

H. Brown Co., Inc., is a Superfund site located at 2200 Turner Avenue NW. Before 1961, and prior to H. Brown operating at the site, the site operated as an uncontrolled dump for municipal waste. From 1961 to about 1982, the site operated under the name H. Brown Company and reclaimed lead from wet-cell batteries, during which time the site became contaminated with battery acid due to poor disposal practices. The site became a Superfund site in 1986, making it eligible for federal support. The site was fenced, a cover installed on top of the site, land use was restricted, and groundwater monitored. PFAS was sampled and ten monitoring wells had PFAS over criteria. The highest results were 120 ppt PFOS (compared to 16 ppt) and 46 ppt PFOA (compared to 8 ppt). The groundwater flows east, southeast towards the Grand River.
