Former Huron Valley Bogie Lake WWTP (White Lake, Oakland County)
The former Huron Valley Bogie Lake Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), located at 1630 Bogie Lake Road, operated under a Groundwater Discharge Permit, which was first issued on May 24, 1973. The facility was operated by the Oakland County Drain Commission and the Oakland County Water Resources Commission, both under contract with Huron Valley Schools. The groundwater discharge permit associated with the facility was terminated, the source area was removed, and the closure of the former WWTP and all the system components was completed in 2013. Since the decommissioning of the former WWTP, the site has been restored to open field green space. The former WWTP serviced an elementary school, middle school, and high school.
PFAS was determined to be a potential concern at this facility both because the former WWTP had an ongoing issue with a sodium/chloride groundwater plume and because EGLE’s state-wide sampling efforts have shown that schools can be a source of PFAS from their floor wax and use of cleaning products. EGLE sampled four groundwater monitoring wells for PFAS in May 2025. In August 2025, consultants for Huron Valley Schools resampled the same four wells and an additional five groundwater monitoring wells. Exceedances of the Part 201 criteria for PFAS were found in monitoring wells MW-9 and MW-9D in both rounds of sampling. The highest PFAS concentrations were 55.7 ppt PFOA (compared to 8 ppt) and 111 ppt PFHxS (compared to 51 ppt), in MW-9. Estimated groundwater flow direction is to the south-southeast.
