Citgo Petroleum Corporation (Ferrysburg, Ottawa County)

Citgo Petroleum Corporation (Citgo) has a terminal located at 524 3rd Street, Ferrysburg. In the 1990s there were three petroleum releases, which caused environmental contamination. Because of that, the property has been under ongoing cleanup and monitoring for many years.

In late 2025, Citgo submitted a Site Investigation Report to EGLE with PFAS groundwater sampling results. The report showed PFAS above criteria in the groundwater at the property. The highest results were 1,500 ppt PFHxS (compared to 51 ppt), 380 ppt PFNA (compared to 6 ppt), 8,900 ppt PFOS (compared to 16 ppt) and 1,900 ppt PFOA (compared to 8 ppt).

As of February 2026, Citgo is preparing a Response Activity Plan to determine how far the PFAS contamination has spread. Upon review and approval by EGLE, Citgo will implement the plan. Groundwater flows to the northeast toward Vander Kolk Drain, which drains to the Grand River.
