Drinking water and wells
PFAS move easily through the ground and may get into groundwater that is used for some water supplies or for private drinking water wells. When spilled into lakes or rivers used as sources of drinking water, they can get into drinking water supplies.
Investigations and sites
The State of Michigan is working proactively to identify locations where PFAS may be present as a contaminant.
Public engagement
MPART agencies, together with federal agencies and community partners, participate in public meetings to provide information and updates to communities with PFAS sites. Test results and updates on the site investigations as well as other information are provided at these meetings. The public is welcome to attend.
Testing
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) is conducting testing in drinking water, groundwater, lakes & streams, soils, sediments, wastewater, and the PFAS foam that can accumulate at lakes and rivers. EGLE is also partnering with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) to test fish and wildlife.
MPART PFAS Geographic Information System
This app features several datasets as part of Michigan PFAS Action Response Team (MPART)'s efforts:
- PFAS Sites (official list of PFAS sites in Michigan)
- PFAS Surface Water Sampling (PFAS concentrations in surface water samples collected by EGLE)
- Public Water Supply Hexbins and Results Table (PFAS concentrations in municipal drinking water samples collected through two sampling efforts:
- EGLE’s statewide PFAS survey, which tested supplies between 2018 and 2020, prior to Michigan’s PFAS maximum contaminant levels (MCLs), and
- PFAS MCL compliance monitoring results under Michigan’s Safe Drinking Water Act. (2020 – present)
