September 2019: Preparedness Month

WHEREAS, over the last two years, the state of Michigan has experienced instances of extreme cold, severe thunderstorms, flash flooding, and tornadoes resulting in disaster and emergency declarations by the governor, which highlighted how emergencies and disasters can strike at any moment, putting residents, property, and infrastructure at risk; and,

 

WHEREAS, every Michigander should have the opportunity to prepare themselves and their community for emergencies and disasters by taking steps vital to reducing injury and loss of life in hazardous circumstances; and,

 

WHEREAS, being prepared includes staying informed about potential hazards that could affect the individual’s community, developing an emergency plan that includes places to go and who to contact during an emergency, creating a three-day emergency supply kit containing items necessary for survival in the event of an emergency, and learning how the individual can assist until help arrives; and,

 

WHEREAS, businesses can prepare for emergencies and disasters by establishing an emergency preparedness program, creating and implementing an all-hazards emergency plan that is tested, and re-evaluating systems to improve programs prior to an incident; and,

   

WHEREAS, the Michigan State Police, state and local governments, and emergency management partners are committed to helping residents and communities prepare before an emergency strikes; and,

 

WHEREAS, during this month and throughout the year, we join with numerous agencies, nonprofit organizations, and businesses to promote the importance of being prepared for all types of hazards;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim September 2019 as Preparedness Month in Michigan.
