December 2, 2025: Special Education Day

WHEREAS, all young people have valuable strengths, infinite capacities to learn, and the potential to make meaningful contributions to their schools, workplaces, and communities; and,

WHEREAS, we recognize the importance of ensuring that all young people receive the individualized support and accommodations they need to thrive in their classroom and community, and achieve independence throughout their lives; and,

WHEREAS, celebrating the abilities and achievements of students with disabilities enriches our state, schools, and communities, advancing our shared values of inclusion, equity, and opportunity; and,

WHEREAS, celebrated nationally on December 2nd, Special Education Day commemorates the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), signed into law on December 2, 1975—fifty years ago this year—and honors the students, parents, educators, and advocates who work tirelessly to make the promise of special education a reality for every learner; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan continues to be a leader in special education, building on a proud legacy that began with the Michigan Mandatory Special Education (MMSE) Act of 1971, which ensured that all eligible students with disabilities have access to free and appropriate public education and the services needed to succeed, and continuing to center opportunity and outcomes for each and every young person, regardless of ability; and,

WHEREAS, on this day, we encourage all Michiganders to recognize the importance of supporting and celebrating students with disabilities and to thank the dedicated educators, families, and advocates who advance inclusion and opportunity in every community;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim December 2, 2025, as Special Education Day in Michigan.
