August 16-22, 2026: Nonprofit Week

WHEREAS, Michigan's charitable nonprofits provide essential services, strengthen communities, and improve lives through programs that support individuals, families, veterans, and communities across the state; and,

WHEREAS, nonprofit organizations serve as community hubs that bring people together, inspire volunteerism, and help solve local challenges in every Michigan county; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan's nonprofit sector is a major economic driver. Nonprofits create jobs, purchase goods and services from local vendors, and invest resources back into the communities they serve; and,

WHEREAS, employing approximately one in ten Michigan workers and contributing more than $34 billion in annual wages, every dollar spent by charitable nonprofits generates an additional $1.10 in economic activity, demonstrating the sector's far-reaching impact on Michigan's economy; and,

WHEREAS, the missions of charitable nonprofit organizations are supported and enhanced by the Michigan Nonprofit Association, Council of Michigan Foundations, Michigan Association of United Ways, and the Michigan Community Service Commission and their partners; and,

WHEREAS, during this week, we raise awareness of the critical role of charitable nonprofits to the strength and vitality of Michigan's communities. Nonprofits bring people together, strengthen neighborhoods, and address challenges that neither government nor the private sector can solve alone. Their impact can be seen in every corner of the state, making Michigan a stronger, healthier, and more connected place to live and work;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim August 16 – 22, 2026 as Charitable Nonprofit week in Michigan.
